AVID SOFTIMAGE 3D 4.0 HOW TO
Although the software we used in the lab was AutoStudio, I wasn't really teaching students how to use "AutoStudio". The focus of the course was concepts and techniques in modeling, rendering, and animation. That said, up until this semester (funding issues), I developed and taught a 4 course series in 3d computer modeling here at the U of I. Since nobody ever asks me to create an animation of happy little mushroom man, I've never gotten beyond the dabbling stage. work, you just don't have the control over surface continuity issues that you do in Studio/AutoStudio. The modeling is, I suppose, adequate for animators but for I.D. I've dabbled in Maya and although many of the things in there are familiar, it's more of an animators program. A-surface stuff that is intended for either presentation quality, market communications or for rapid prototyping. Most of the stuff I do is technical modeling. Well, actually Maya has only existed for about 4 or 5 years. View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'm by no means an expert, or even proficient, but i'm working on it. (However, Max 5 is really, really good!).įor a couple of examples of the 3D i've done lately look at. I use 3DSMax exclusively, but am thinking about making aquaintances with Maya, since this is supposed to have a very flexible interface and great texture tools. But you would be surprised to see some of the great work i've seen done in Bryce, despite Bryce's reputation as a "landscape generator". Of course some tools make the task a pleasure, others a challenge, and yet some a pain. However, as always you can make crap in Softimage XSI or you can make impressive work in Bruce3D. Softimage was used for Jurrasic park, among others. Max is starting to see use in movies as well (CG effects in Driven was done exclusively in 3DS Max, using various plugins), bu thas mostly been used for games and the FMV's in these. Softimage is pretty heavy, more so than Max.
